Sandip Samaddar

The Bengali Baul musician and composer, whose love for music started 13 years ago, took off on an expedition to propagate the folk form 10 years ago. He plays a variety of instruments and has even made his own. This includes the dotara, the khawmok and the ghungru .

India is a land rich in tradition and steeped in a vibrant repertoire of sounds. One of the signature, yet lesser known, folk forms is Baul music. From the rivers of West Bengal comes this beautiful and spiritually significant music and Sandip Samaddar is one advocate of this style of music. He regularly composes scores to pass on his knowledge to people around him. And, his quest to keep this tradition relevant is his tribute to many engaged in the spiritual practice of experiencing Baul music.

Baul Music celebrates divine love by singing and dancing at the same time. They sing songs to communicate the message of love and ecstasy that goes beyond time and space. Bauls are folk, poet-singers who sing songs with a profound mystical meaning. The Baul’s performances are of high energy which may transport you to a new realm.
